Buying A Boat At Auction: What You Should Know

31st Oct 2017

While they’re not an everyday occurrence at a Gregsons auctions in Perth, from time to time we do have the pleasure of auctioning off a boat! Owning a boat can be a luxury and a dream come true, but it’s important to keep in mind that a boat is a big investment and it’s not a decision to be made in the heat of the moment. To be sure you’re as satisfied as possible with your purchase, these are the steps we recommend you take before deciding to purchase any boat at auction.

Do Your Research Prior

The Gregsons Facebook page is our hub for our exciting new online auction listings; it is also where we will announce each auction well before the closing time. So, if you are on our Facebook and you see something you may be interested in, make sure you check it out in detail!

If, for example you saw a yacht as part of one of our online auctions, you would need to ask yourself if it fulfils your needs or if it’s really within your price range. If not, it might be best to keep your eye out for a smaller boat, or even the next dingy that pops up for auction.

It’s also important to make yourself aware of the terms and conditions of our auctions here in Perth; familiarising yourself with our process will ensure you know what is needed to fulfil your agreement with Gregsons should you win the auction.

View Your Potential New Boat Beforehand

You’ve seen the boat listing for the auction and you’re definitely interested, so what now? We encourage you to see the vessel in person, so you can see first-hand what kind of condition it is in. The inspection will help you to determine whether it is suitable for what you want it for.

With your potential new dreamboat, you need to keep in mind all the ongoing costs that come with it, such as fuel, servicing and licencing. Check the vessel’s service and repair history, and do your own check, noting down any cracks or leaks. Any small problems such as cracks or leaks will result in extra money being spent in repairs down the track and this will affect how much you are willing to bid at auction.

How to Buy at a Gregsons Auction

We have tried to make the buying process as easy as possible. To begin with, you have to register as a member, and once you’ve done that, you’re free to explore our range of auction items.

If you’re a winner, you will receive an email with the details of your winning bid and auction item. You’ll have the choice to pay online through the Gregsons member dashboard, or to pay via bank transfer to our nominated bank account. Once your item is paid for, it’s time to organise collection! If you’re picking up your new boat, it’s time to think about how you might get it home; a boat trailer and a car capable of towing a boat are essential here.

Purchasing a luxury boat, fishing dingy or speedboat can be exciting, but it’s important to do your research before you venture into the deep. If you’re on the lookout for a new boat, car, machinery, whitegoods and more, check out the exciting world of online auctions with Gregsons!
